STANDING IN THE GAP

by admin | Oct 20, 2025 | Devotion | 0 comments

family unity

Text: Luke 10:30-37

A gap represents a breach in a wall, an opening that leaves a city exposed to attacks. In spiritual terms, it symbolizes vulnerability, the open spaces in our families, communities, and lives where the enemy seeks to infiltrate and destroy. But God calls us to be repairers of the breach, to stand in the gap for those we love and for generations yet to come.

Standing in the gap means taking a position of spiritual responsibility. It is choosing to intercede, to mediate, to be the in-between for people who cannot yet stand for themselves. Jesus Christ is the perfect example of this, the greatest intercessor. “He ever lives to make intercession for us” (Hebrews 7:25). Though He committed no sin, He laid down His life so that we might reign with Him in eternity (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Throughout Scripture, we see others who stood in the gap. Moses interceded for Israel when God’s anger burned against them. Their disobedience warranted destruction, but Moses’ prayers preserved a nation. Today, the same call rests on us. Every family faces a destroyer waiting to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). But those who come under the covering of the blood of Jesus must continue to stand firm, because life itself is warfare.

You must make up your mind to take that position. Many families today have been stripped and beaten by the enemy. They’ve lost their spiritual covering; their prayer altars have grown cold. The robber, unconcerned, continues his attacks, leaving people half-dead, going through things God never willed for them. But thanks be to Jesus, the enemy cannot move unchecked. He’s on a leash, restrained by divine authority. Still, someone must rise to enforce that authority through prayer.

Ask yourself:

  • What is prayer like in my family?
  • What is the state of our worship?

In Luke 10, it was the Samaritan who helped the wounded man. Samaritans were considered outsiders, yet he was the one who showed compassion. That tells us something profound: you don’t need a title, position, or office to stand in the gap. God can use anyone willing.

Parents, let compassion drive you. Let your love for your children push you to intercede for them. The words you speak about your children are seeds, even the gossip or complaints you share can shape their future. Be intentional about placing your children at the center of your prayers and decisions. Many children today carry burdens passed down by their parents, emotional, spiritual, or even financial. But standing in the gap breaks those cycles.

To stand in the gap will cost you, your time, your energy, your comfort, even your relationships. But it also grants you access to heaven’s resources. When you choose to intercede, heaven backs you up. Remember Peter in prison? The church prayed without ceasing, and divine help arose. When you pray for your family, help will arise for you too.

Ezekiel 22:30 says, “I looked for someone among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap…” God is still looking. When you take that step, He will begin to reveal things to you, secrets about your family, your future, your nation. He will equip you to wage a good warfare.

Standing in the gap is a choice. And as you stand, know that you are not alone, Jesus stands with you, interceding beside you.

So rise, mother. Rise, father. Stand in the gap. Heavenly support is waiting for you.
